ENGINE LUBRICANT DEALERS (ELD) BRANCH OF NUPENG HOLDS SUCCESSFUL NATIONAL DELEGATES CONFERENCE

In accordance with the Constitution of the Union and the Branch's bye-laws, the Engine Lubricant Dealers (ELD) branch of NUPENG successfully held their National Delegates Conference on Wednesday, September 18, 2024, across the Zonal Council Offices of the Union.
The democratic process, overseen by Comrade Onohwohwo Otite (DGS-Special Duties), was conducted in a free, transparent, and fair manner. Comrade Aderibigbe Rafiu Adekola was elected as the National Chairman of the Branch, along with twenty-one other officers who will lead the Branch for the next four years.
NUPENG HONOURED BY LABOUR WRITERS ASSOCIATION OF NIGERIA (LAWAN)

On Thursday, September 5, 2024, Comrade (Prince) Williams Akporeha and the Nigeria Union of Petroleum and Natural Gas Workers (NUPENG) were honored with the “Friend of LAWAN Prize” by the Labour Writers Association of Nigeria (LAWAN). This award recognizes their longstanding support for LAWAN.
The award ceremony was part of a one-day workshop themed “Challenges of the Nation’s Economic Downturn: Survival Options for Workers,” held at the Radisson Blu in Ikeja GRA, Lagos.
Due to work commitments, the Union’s leadership could not attend in person. However, Comrade Suleiman M. Pema, POS (Research & Public Affairs), represented them and delivered a goodwill message from the President of the Union.
He emphasized the timeliness and importance of the workshop’s theme in navigating Nigeria’s challenging economic landscape and praised LAWAN’s unwavering dedication to advocating for better conditions for Nigerian workers.

Earlier in the week, the leadership teams of the Nigeria Union of Petroleum and Natural Gas Workers (NUPENG) and the Petroleum and Natural Gas Senior Staff Association (PENGASSAN) paid a courtesy visit to Dangote Refinery and Petrochemical Company Limited, located in the Free Trade Zone, Ibeju Lekki, Lagos.
They were warmly received by the management of the company led by Mr. D.V.G Edwin, Vice President Oil and Gas.
Discussions focused on fostering cooperation and collaboration among stakeholders in the oil and gas industry.

The Nigeria Union of Petroleum and Natural Gas Workers (NUPENG) Port Harcourt Zonal Council recently organized its annual Industrial Relations Seminar at Watbridge Hotels and Resort in the Garden City of Port Harcourt.
Aligned with the Union’s leadership unwavering commitment to workers’ education and training, the seminar brought together representatives from various branches of the Union.
Seminar Theme: “Unionization and Technological Advancement: Issues and Prospects for Consideration”.
During the two-day event, participants engaged in intensive learning, shared knowledge, and strategic planning. Experienced resource persons facilitated thought-provoking lectures, discussions, workshops, and interactive sessions.
Comrade Mina Samuel, Chairman, Port Harcourt Zonal Council of NUPENG, declared the seminar open, he emphasized the importance of member education. He highlighted the need to address the evolving realities of the Oil and Gas Industry, encouraging active participation from all attendees.

NUPENG PARTICIPANTS JOIN OTHER TRADE UNIONS AT NLC RAIN SCHOOL 2024

In a remarkable display of solidarity and commitment to workers' education, participants from the Nigeria Union of Petroleum and Natural Gas Workers (NUPENG) joined forces with other trade unions at the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) Rain School 2024. The event, held in Uyo, Akwa Ibom State, brought together representatives from various sectors to deliberate on critical issues related to labour, education, and the future of work.
Theme: Workers Education and the Future of Work.
The NLC Rain School 2024 provided a platform for intensive learning, knowledge sharing, and strategic planning. Under the theme "Workers Education and the Future of Work," participants engaged in thought-provoking discussions, workshops, and interactive sessions.
As the NLC Rain School 2024 concluded, NUPENG participants returned to their respective zones—Lagos, Warri, Port Harcourt, and Kaduna—with renewed determination. They carry with them the knowledge gained during the event, ready to champion workers' rights, promote education, and shape the future of work.
NUPENG Lagos Zonal Council Annual Industrial Relations Seminar 2024

July 17th-18th, 2024, The NUPENG Lagos Zonal Office successfully hosted its annual workshop training in the historic city of Ibadan, Oyo State. The Industrial Relations Seminar focused on the theme "Unionization and Technological Advancement: Issues and Prospects for Consideration." The event brought together participants (members), industry experts, and stakeholders to deliberate on critical topics affecting workers in the petroleum and gas sector.
Key Highlights:
1. Opening Address by Comrade Tayo Aboyeji, Chairman Lagos Zonal Council of NUPENG: - He warmly welcomed all participants, guests, and stakeholders. - He appreciated the leadership of the Union, ably led by Comrade Williams Akporeha (President) and Comrade Afolabi Olawale (General Secretary), for their unwavering commitment to workers' education and training. - Comrade Tayo emphasized the timely nature of this year's theme, highlighting the role of unions in safeguarding workers' rights while embracing technological opportunities. - Challenges faced by workers and proactive strategies to protect their rights will be discussed he stated.
2. Goodwill Messages: - Goodwill messages were delivered on behalf of the President and General Secretary of the Union, who were unavoidably absent due to pressing national engagements. - Comrade Modupe Otegbayo (VP Lagos Zone) and Comrade Idahoise Osunbor (SAGS, Admin Head, Lagos Zone) delivered messages on behalf of the President and GeneralSecretary, encouraging participants to pay attention, learn, relearn, and unlearn. - Leadership from participating formal (TotalEnergies, Chevron, Schlumberger) and informal branches of NUPENG (PTD, OGS, LPGAR, IMB, PSW, SUTAKEP) also conveyed goodwill messages.
3. Pension and Health Education: Day one commenced with educational sessions on pension and health for the participants.
4. Papers presented- Day One: - Two papers were presented on day one by: - Comrade Barrister Femi Aborisade discussed "Technology and Unionization." - Comrade Dr. Babatunde Agbi presented on "The Coming Artificial Intelligence: Opportunities and Challenges." - Robust question-and-answer sessions followed each paper.
5. Women Participation: - The workshop reflected the gender-sensitive nature of the Union, with full representation of women participants.
Day Two: Arrival of Comrade Dr. Salimon Akanni Oladiti (NUPENG NationalTrustee) and Comrade Solomon Kilanko (NUPENG Dep. President) injected more energy into the participants with their arrival. The IndustriALL Global Union Sub-Saharan Africa Regional Office from 9-11 July 2024, convened a two-day trade union meeting in Lagos, Nigeria. The primary focus of the gathering was on organizing workers, with special attention given to the Dangote Group, particularly its Refinery and Petrochemicals division. The event brought together senior officers, including Presidents and General Secretaries from various Nigerian affiliates, such as:

National Union of Textile, Garments, and Tailoring Workers of Nigeria (NUTGTWN)
Mr. Kenny Mogane, the Regional Officer from IndustriALL Global Union Sub-Saharan Regional Office, moderated the meeting.
Participants engaged in discussions about effective strategies for union organizing in the rapidly evolving workplace landscape. The challenges and opportunities presented by the dynamic world of work were central to these deliberations.
COURTESY VISIT TO DANGOTE REFINERY AND PETROCHEMICALS
On the third day, the meeting concluded with a courtesy visit to the Dangote Refinery and Petrochemicals Complex in Ibeju Lekki, Free Trade Zone, Lagos. The delegation received a warm welcome from Mr. Douglas Adiele (MD, Human Relations Manager), Mr. Olayinka O. Akande (MD, DIFZDC) and other senior management staff of the refinery and petrochemical complex.
After a guided tour of the facility the delegation had a robust discussion with Mr. Devakumar Edwin (Vice President, Oil and Gas) at Dangote Industries Limited. He took took the delegation through memory lane to intimate them about the story of the audacious dream and how they defied all odds through thick and thin including very personal sacrifices made by the President, Alhaji Aliko Dangote, to arrive at the present position of this gigantic facility which has become the pride of the nation and which by no means is the final destination of the President as he is determine to leave a legacy through these projects and more in the future which will serve to continue to boost the economy of our dear country for not only our present generation but for future ones yet unborn.
Mr. Devakumar Edwin also continued the history of Dangote Industries Limited by highlighting their commitment to adding value to available resources in Nigeria through their ventures in Oil and Gas. He thanked the delegation for the visit and solidarity.
Comrade Oluchi Amaogu (NUPENG) and Comrade Abang Eyam (PENGASSAN), responded on behalf of the delegation “ IndustriALL Global Union Nigerian Council congratulated Alhaji Dangote and his management team for successfully completing the largest single-train refinery in the world". The delegates commended Alhaji Aliko Dangote for reshaping narratives and declared that IndustriALL Nigeria affiliates would now serve as ambassadors for Dangote Refinery and Petrochemicals. They emphasized that any harm to Dangote Refinery and Petrochemicals would be considered an injury to all.
Furthermore, the IndustriALL Nigerian Affilliates extended warm congratulations to Alhaji Aliko Dangote and his team for building a national asset with the potential to transform the Nigerian oil and gas sector. They also recognized the significant contribution of the Dangote Group in creating employment opportunities for both Nigerians and non-Nigerians.
The IndustriAll Global Union Nigeria affilliates sees Dangote Group as an important partner for unions in job creation in Nigeria and Sub Sahara Africa as well as one of the champions for industrialization of Africa and an enabler for the Africa Continental Free Trade Agreement (AfCFTA) to take effect.
Mr. Edwin also used the occasion to inform the leadership of the Petroleum Tanker Drivers (PTD) Branch of NUPENG, Lagos Zone, who facilitated the courtesy visit, of the approval granted by Management for an office space and a logistic vehicle for them.
Finally, the Nigerian affiliates pledged unwavering support to counter any unholy efforts of International Oil Companies (IOCs) that might hinder the Dangote Refinery progress by denying access to crude oil supplies, thereby jeopardizing its optimal operations. Alhaji Aliko Dangote’s dedication to national development and job creation was highly appreciated during the visit.
The gathering marked a crucial step towards advancing workers’ rights and promoting sustainable growth in the Nigerian energy sector.

The Nigeria Union of Petroleum and Natural Gas Workers (NUPENG) today conducted a peaceful Special Delegates Conference for the Petroleum Tanker Drivers (PTD) Branch of the Union at the Funplex Event Center, beside CMD Village, Shangisha, Lagos State. The conference was convened in compliance with the judgment of Hon. Justice O. Y. Anuwe of the National Industrial Court of Nigeria (NICN), sitting in Abuja, 29th May 2024, which nullified the previous PTD Branch election held in October 2023 in Ibadan, Oyo State.
The conference, attended by 570 delegates representing 177 units of the Petroleum Tanker Drivers Branch from Kaduna, Lagos, Port Harcourt, and Warri Zones participated in the elections.
Distinguished guests present at the elections included NUPENG President Comrade (Prince) Williams Akporeha, General Secretary Comrade Olawale Afolabi, Registrar of Trade Unions Mr. Amos Falonipe, and Barr. Segun Arowolo from the Legal Department of the Federal Ministry of Labour and Employment. Also present were Alhaji Othman Yusuf, President of the National Association of Road Transport Owners (NARTO), Comrade Joseph Akinlaja, former General Secretary of NUPENG, Barrister Femi Aborisade and Barrister Rukayat Jigan of Abope Chambers, Union leaders/ veterans and the media.
The conference proceeded smoothly, emphasizing unity and solidarity within the Union. At the end of proceedings, the Returning Officer for the election, Comrade Onohwohwo Otite (Deputy General Secretary -Special Duties) declared Comrade Augustine Egbon as the National Chairman of the PTD Branch of NUPENG. Comrade Egbon, hailing from the Benin Unit of the Warri Zonal Council of PTD, was duly elected in accordance with the Branch's Bye law and the Union's Constitution.

The Surface Tank Kerosene Peddlers (SUKATEP) Branch of the Nigeria Union of Petroleum and Natural Gas Workers (NUPENG) held their 4th Quadrennial National Delegates’ Conference on 13th June 2024 in Benin City, Edo State.

This democratic exercise reaffirms the commitment of SUKATEP to upholding the principles of the Union and ensuring effective representation of its members.
The newly elected executives will now take office to serve the Branch for the next term.
On behalf of the leadership of our Union, we write to profoundly commend you all for your unalloyed and unwavering compliance with the directive issued on June 1st, 2024, to embark on an indefinite nationwide strike in compliance with the directive of the Joint Labour Center.
Meanwhile, consequent upon the decision reached at the Joint National Executive Council meeting of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and Trade Union held on 4th June, 2024, that the nationwide strike should be suspended forOne (1) Week to allow further negotiations on the issues at stake based on the intervention of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, you are hereby formally notified that the action has been suspended with immediate effect.
To the effect of this decision, we write to direct all our members and Branches in all Oil and Gas installations, operations and services including distribution and marketing of Petroleum products, to comply with this joint decision of the Nigeria Labour Congress and Trade Union Congress to suspend the nationwide strike with immediate effect.
We urge the Federal Government to utilize this grace period of one week to do all the needful for meaningful engagement and address the concerns of Nigerian workers to avoid further escalation of the crisis.
All leaders of our great Union at all levels, from the Units, Zones and Branches, should immediately ensure total compliance with this directive.

This day serves as a platform to honour the invaluable contributions of workers towards the development of the nation. It's a time to reflect on the advancements made and challenges faced in the pursuit of enhancing workers' conditions.The Nigeria Union of Petroleum and Natural Gas Workers (NUPENG), under the leadership of Comrade (Prince) Williams Akporeha (President) and Comrade Afolabi Olawale (General Secretary), joined forces with the leaders of the NLC, TUC, and various trade union leaders, along with the hardworking Nigerian workers, to mark this special day at Eagle Square, CBD, Abuja.
The event was graced by several dignitaries including His Excellency Vice President Kashim Shettima, Senator Goodswill Akpabio (President of the Senate), Hon. Tajuddeen Abbas (Speaker of the House of Representatives), Senator George Akume (Secretary to the Government of the Federation) Mr. Nyesom Wike (Minister of the FCT), Mrs. Nkiruka Onyejeocha (Minister of State for Labour and Employment), among many other top government officials.The Presidents of the two labour centers, Comrade Joe Ajaero and Comrade Festus Osifo of NLC and TUC respectively, emphasized in their speeches the importance of prioritizing 'people first' in all government policies and everything else to fall into place. Earlier President Bola Ahmed Tinubu in his remarks conveyed through his Special Adviser on Media, Mr. Ajuri Ngelale, titled ‘President Tinubu Salutes Nigerian Workers on May Day’, pledged better living and working conditions for all Nigerians of working age, saying the “ custodians of the nation’s machinery deserve fair wage and enhanced welfare”, he further praised the efforts and sacrifices of the working class in nation-building. The labour leadership in Lagos state, headed by Comrade Funmi Sessi (Chairman) and Comrade Tayo Aboyeji (Secretary) alongside other Trade Union leaders in the State welcomed His Excellency Babajide Sanwo-Olu, the Executive Governor of Lagos State to Onikan Stadium, TBS, Lagos Island, the venue for the state's May Day activities. His Excellency Mr. Babajide Sanwo-Olu, along with other top government officials of the State, paid tribute to the workers' sacrifices on their special day. This festive atmosphere was mirrored in all the state capitals across the federation.
