PRESS STATEMENT: The National Leadership of Nigeria Union of Petroleum and Natural Gas Workers (NUPENG) in furtherance to our pledge to be on the frontline in the fight against the Coronavirus is officially sending out to various operational locations, Drivers Stop-Over Spots and loading points customized hand sanitizers and other safety gears. The Union carefully engaged a competent pharmaceutical company with good track records known as ADCEM Pharmaceutical Company to produce specifically for our members across the nooks and crannies of Nigeria. These hand sanitizers come in 10 litres transparent jerry cans to serve as refill for dispensers with other safety kits, such as hand gloves and mouth masks which we had already distributed across to all our zonal offices in Port Harcourt, Kaduna, Warri and of course Lagos. As you may be aware, we have 154 Petroleum Loading Depots across the country, but as we are talking we have 120 of these numbers  in active operation. Besides that, Petroleum Tanker Drivers (PTD) Branch of NUPENG have about 300 places across the country that serve as their Stop-Over-Point for resting and recreation, we will be distributing these items to all these places too. Conservatively, we will be sending out about a thousand of these items every week until the siege is over. ADCEM Pharmaceutical Company may not have the capacity to meet this demand and we are in talks with other companies to support this production. We are also going to provide further logistics and support to our members as we deemed necessary. Oil and Gas Workers need all your support at this period and we are doing this from the meager savings we have. Thank you and God bless. INTERNATIONAL WOMEN’S DAY: IndustriALL Nigeria Council Harps On Gender Parity

By Emmanuel Ajibulu IndustriALL Nigeria Council (Women Committee) has on Wednesday, March 11, 2020 tasked women both in formal and informal sectors to actively embrace this year's theme for International Women’s Day, tagged, “I am Generation Equality: Realizing Women’s Rights” so as to accelerate gender parity and say no to discrimination in all forms. Women’s rights and gender equality are taking centre stage globally and these women in Union are leaving no stones unturned to accentuate the generation equality campaign by bringing together people of every gender, age, ethnicity, and religion to drive actions that will create desirable gender-equal world that everyone could be proud of. The female unionists who initially converged at the National secretariat of NUPENG Wednesday morning were seen chanting solidarity songs condemning gender-based violence and discrimination. They also danced around Jibowu and other adjoining streets and subsequently settled down to the Lagos Zone of NUPENG at Isaac John for paper presentations to deepen their advocacy despite the inclement nature of the weather. The women all clad in IndustriALL T-shirts with the inscription, "FGN Ratify and Domesticate ILO C190" used the strength of their campaigns to seek ratification and domestication of ILO Convention 190, economic justice and rights, bodily autonomy, sexual and reproductive health and rights, feminist action for climate justice, while also craving for technology and innovation for gender equality and feminist leadership amongst others. Twenty-five years since the adoption of the Beijing Declaration and Platform for Action, a progressive roadmap for gender equality, according to them it’s time to take stock of progress and bridge the gaps that remain through bold and decisive actions. Chairperson of the IndustriALL Nigeria Council, (Women Committee), Comrade Oluchi Amaogu, addressing the women at the Lagos Zone of NUPENG's office admonished all humanity to rise up to say no to violence and harassment against women and girls. She noted: "C190 provides a momentum for trade unions and other stakeholders to fight violence and harassment in the world of work. Unions have an important role to play to make sure the Convention becomes part of national laws. We call on our Unions to raise awareness and provide education to Union members and society at large. Mobilize around the issue of violence and harassment in the world of work; build alliances with other trade unions, national centers, NGOs and especially women's rights groups to help eliminate workplace violence and harassment." The women leader added: "Our unions and labour centers, either through CBAs and constant campaigns are expected to play their roles accordingly to meet this goal. To every comrade in the house we must be purpose driven though from different cultures and religious background but one purpose, protection of workers’ rights and defence of women. Let's work with love and the spirit of comradeship." Comrade Oluchi stressed further; "all affiliates are encouraged to take the pledge to end violence and harassment against women in their workplaces and in the Union. You can even visit industriALL website www.industriall-union.org for more details. As women, I urge us not be discouraged irrespective of the challenges. To our male counterparts and leaders, we implore and solicit your supports, to our government, we call for the ratification and domestication of C190." She stated. The auspicious gathering had in attendance seasoned resource persons who made paper presentations to intensify the consciousness of the women in Union about the theme of the anniversary as well as the essence of International Women's Day and how the women's rights can be guaranteed and sustained. Comrade Remi Ihejirika, a Project Manager at Friedrich Ebert Stiftung (FES) dwelt exclusively on International Labour Organization (ILO) Convention 190; whilst Comrade Oyinkan Olasanoye, National President of ASSBIF made a robust presentation on the 2020 theme of IWD, “I am Generation Equality: Realizing Women’s Rights”. Similarly, insightful remarks and fraternal messages were equally delivered by the representatives of Comrade B.G Olatunji, Chairman IndustriALL Nigeria National Council as well as Comrade Issa Aremu (mni), Vice President, IndustriALL Global Union Federation, SSAR. Participants at the lecture hall of the Lagos Zone of NUPENG office who also took part in the awareness walk and rally on Wednesday included members of all the Nigerian eight affiliates of IndustriALL Global Union, namely National Union of Textile Garment and Tailoring Workers of Nigeria (NUTGTWN), National Union of Chemical Footwear Rubber Leather and Non Metallic Employees (NUCFRLANMPE). Others are Chemical and Non-Metallic Senior Staff Association of Nigeria (CANMPSSAN), Petroleum and Natural Gas Senior Staff Association of Nigeria (PENGASSAN), Nigeria Union of Petroleum and Natural Gas Workers (NUPENG), National Union of Electricity Employees (NUEE), Steel and Engineering Workers Union (SEWUN) and AUTOBATE.

NUPENG Lauds Nigeria House of Representativesfor Initiating a Bill to Criminalize Casualisation of Workers in Nigeria

PRESS STATEMENT: The National Leadership of Nigeria Union of Petroleum and Natural Gas Workers (NUPENG) is specially pleased with the patriotic and humane efforts being made by the 9th Assembly of the House of Representatives in the ongoing process for the passage of a bill seeking to amend the Labour Act to criminalise casualisation of workers in Nigeria. With this legislative intervention that has passed the second reading, NUPENG as a custodian of blue-collar workers in the oil and gas sector isparticularly excited with profound sense of appreciation in our current set ofLawmakers in seeing that the bill essentially seeks to prohibit engagement ofcasual workers beyond six months. We also discovered that section 8 of the bill accommodates as beingproposed a clause to the Act which provides that every worker shall enjoy fullemployment benefits as a permanent staff after six months of engagement andthat any employer who disengages a worker after a period of six months from thedate of first engagement without regularising the worker’s employment shall atthe date of disengagement pay to the worker full salary, allowances andentitlements due to a permanent staff for two months provided the worker hasnot been found liable of any criminal act involving fraud resulting tofinancial loss to the company amongst other things. This vicious phenomenon called worker's casualisation has regrettablyaccentuate the increasing levels of crimes and socio dislocations Nigeria iscurrently experiencing and has particularly caused our Union and members lotsof pains, setbacks, anguish and agonies for decades. Unfortunately, some exploitative and manipulative multinationalcompanies and their local collaborators in the oil and gas industry have overthe years being exploiting gaps in our Labour laws to flippantly treat NigeriansOil & Gas workers with disdain and indecent working conditions. Thankfully, our visionary Federal parliamentarians are gallantly risingto the occasion in ameliorating the pitiable situation of Nigerian Workersthrough their legislative powers by showing remarkable courage and capacity toreview the country's Labour Act so as to cater to the present-day needs of theNigerian workers with the intention of addressing some of the contemporarylabour challenges in the larger interest of the working people in the Oil & Gas industry. The Union also uses this medium to commend the sponsor of the Bill, Hon. Olawale Raji, a lawmaker representing Epe Federal Constituency from Lagos stateand the entire Leadership of the National Assembly for putting the interests of Nigerian workers above every other interest. This is timely, and it's a goodstep in the right direction and should attract floodgates of commendations and support from all and sundry. While we are also in similar vein calling on our distinguished senatorsto emulate this patriotic zeal of the House by speedily concurring to thisremarkable bill, we request that Employers who dissuade workers from getting unionizedshould also be sanctioned and penalized. To this extent, NUPENG can profoundly say this is a new dawn in theannals of industrial relations practice in Nigeria, a season whereby workers'confidence could be restored and a period where workers will no longer sufferindecent workplace treatment, job insecurity and other forms of precarious workconditions that often expose them to health risks, exploitation, depression, etc. NUPENG therefore urges the National AssemblyLeadership to count on our support at any time for the success of this billwhether at the Public Hearing stage or any other time which they may deemnecessary. It is our firm belief and expectation that this bill will bespeedily passed and meet Presidential assent before the end of second quarterof 2020. Our solidarity remains constant for the Union makes us strong. SIGNED: Comrade (Prince) Williams Eniredonana Akporeha, National President of NUPENG, Comrade Afolabi Olawale, General Secretary of NUPENG.

Breaking: NUPENG Pickets General Electric In VI Over Unsettled Terminal Benefits Of Disengaged Staff

The Nigeria Union of Petroleum and Natural Gas Workers (NUPENG) on Monday, February 3, 2020 disrupted business activities at the head quarters of General Electric over non settlement of exit benefits of their ex-staff four years after disengagement from service. The main entrance to the Victoria Island office of the company located at Bishop Aboyade Cole was blocked early Monday morning by protesting NUPENG members who are simply demanding for the protection of their rights after long period of failed promises of their former employer. The well comported, peaceful and articulate protesters who are largely clad in red attire were seen chanting solidarity songs, carrying placards with various inscriptions and also baring their minds on what prompted the action against the company, despite several entreaties by relevant authorities including the Department of State Services to resolve the crisis but all to no avail. The affected workers led by the Chairman of Lagos Zone of NUPENG, Comrade Tayo Aboyeji and the Head of Zone, Comrade Lanre Badmus expressed displeasure over flagrant refusal of Arco Group, an employment contractor to General Electric to pay their severance packages that is long overdue. Reacting to the legitimate protest on behalf of the workers, Head of Lagos Zone of NUPENG, Comrade Badmus said Nigerians cannot continue to be treated with disdain or contempt and that the rights of workers cannot continue to be abused without grief consequences such as this. According to him, "the protesting workers are only asking for their severance benefits. Meanwhile on this same matter, the Ministry of Labour and Employment had intervened on it for three different occassions, and an MOU was even signed by NUPENG and other concerned parties. Meanwhile, General Electric and its recruiting firm, Arco Group agreed to pay the workers their benefits within 7 days in December 2019. Part of the resolution was that General Electric claimed it needed to reconcile excess withholding tax deductions of the affected staff from FIRS, giving assurances that as soon as that is done payment would commence. When further contacted on why the payment hasn't commenced in early 2020 Arco Group in connivance with its principal claimed that deductions are yet to be remitted to them from FIRS. NUPENG went further to confirm but realised FIRS had done the needful and shocked why General Electric has refused to honour its word." Comrade Badmus passionately stated. As at the time of filing in this report, the management of the company refused to react to all the allegations leveled against them by the protesters. CHEVRON AND ITS CONTRACTOR SHOULD RE-ENGAGE OUR SACKED 32 MEMBERS WITHIN 7 DAYS

PRESS STATEMENT The National leadership of Nigeria Union of Petroleum and Natural Gas Workers (NUPENG) with deep frustration is grossly disappointed about the directive of Chevron Nigeria Limited to its Contractor, Cordeau Nigeria Limited to sack all its 32 workers for insisting on being NUPENG members. This obnoxious act of Chevron and its employment Contractor which was viciously carried out at the twilight of 2019 was in bad fate and an affront to Labour/workers' rights and also human rights relating to labour relations between workers and employers, codified in national and international labour and employment law. These rights influence working conditions of workers' employment, and one of the most central is the right to freedom of association, otherwise known as the right to organize; and workers organized in trade union exercise such right to collectively bargain so as to improve their working conditions which is in tandem with International Labour Organization's convention and other known extant rules practiced anywhere in the world. For Chevron to act in contrary to the existing provisions of the law, legitimacy and legality is what we cannot understand and we would do everything within our powers constitutionally to protect the rights and the interests of our affected members some of whom are already hospitalized as a result of the shock they got from their purported sack by their employer few hours before year 2020. We are still surpised that despite previous agreements and existing understanding on other separate matters between the union and Chevron Nigeria Limited, which was orchestrated by Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC), National Petroleum Investment Management Services (NAPIMS), the Ministry of Labour and Employment, and other stakeholders in the industry, Chevron could still embark on such unthinkable, inhuman, retrogressive and anti labour infractions without consultations and not also minding the attendant negative implications this will have on the country socio-economically. NUPENG with every atom of strength in us is vehemently opposed to this unpatriotic and uncivilized move in view of our assertive commitment to the protection of jobs of our members and considering the high level of unemployment in the country which is directly responsible for the increasing cases of insecurity, deviant behaviours among our youths and other tensed and challenging situations in Nigeria. In view of this heartbreaking dilemma which is currently posing a huge threat to the nation's industrial peace and harmony as well as socio-economic activities of the citizenry, the union is however using this medium to reach out to the management of Chevron to call back to work all the sacked workers forthwith. Consequent on the above demand and having taken us for granted, NUPENG hereby puts all our members on red alert should Chevron Nigeria Limited and its Contractor fail to honour or comply with our demand within the next seven (7) days, effective today (Wednesday, January 1, 2020), we would also not hesitate to take all necessary legal options available to us; including nationwide industrial actions and demonstrations to press home our legitimate and urgent request. The National leadership of NUPENG is equally not unaware that the Warri Zonal Council of our union had picketed the facility of the affected workers; we would like to put it on record that we empathize with them and share in their worries, agonies, regrets and grief, and we painfully say we would not retreat until the needful is done in their overall interest, but urge them to remain law abiding, calm and civil. For a fact, this is not a new year gift anyone could ever wished for even his worst enemy. Meanwhile, as a law abiding and socially responsible trade union who understands the collateral damage industrial action could have on the economy of our nation especially in the entire petroleum resources value chain, we are using this medium to call on the Federal Government, particularly the Ministry of Labour and Employment, Ministry of Petroleum Resources, NNPC, National Assembly and other key industry players to intervene on this matter so that Oil and Gas workers will not suffer and be traumatized or unjustly thrown to the unemployment market in the instance of Chevron and its Contractor. Our solidarity remains constant for the Union makes us strong. SIGNED: Comrade (Prince) Williams Eniredonana Akporeha, National President of NUPENG, Comrade Afolabi Olawale, General Secretary of NUPENG.

Petrol Scarcity Looms As Tanker Drivers Give FG Ultimatum Over Lagos Gridlock

The Petroleum Tanker Drivers (PTD) branch of the Nigeria Union of Petroleum and Natural Gas Workers (NUPENG) at the weekend threatened to withdraw its services from January 15, 2020, if the Federal Government fails to clear Lagos roads of the gridlock caused by containers. National Chairman of PTD, Comrade (Otunba) Salimon Akanni Oladiti, expressed disappointment over the Federal Government’s inability to decongest Lagos‎ roads of trucks conveying containers, saying the development may lead to severe scarcity of petroleum products if not well handled. He lamented that the lingering traffic congestion on the roads, particularly at Coconut and Tin Can Island axis, has forced its members to spend weeks before loading petroleum products from the Lagos Tank farm, a situation he said was unacceptable. Oladiti issued the ultimatum in Benin City, Edo State while addressing journalists at the end of PTD’s quarterly Branch Executive Council (BEC) meeting. “Although the Federal Task Force set up to decongest Lagos‎ roads of trucks carrying containers have tried its best, the gridlock, particularly at Coconut and Tin Can Island axis still persist, thereby forcing our members to spend weeks before loading petroleum products from the Lagos Tank farm,” he said. Oladiti, who also lamented activities of vandals, said vandals have destroyed pipelines meant to ensure the free flow of petroleum products across the country. “The founding fathers meant well by constructing over 5,000km of pipelines. If successive governments since 1999 had paid attention to roads and vandalism, the facilities would not have degenerated to their current level,” he added. He, therefore, urged the government to speed up the rehabilitation and reconstruction of the Benin-Warri and Benin-Auchi-Lokoja roads to enhance ease of moving products. While commending President Muhammadu Buhari for his transformation agenda and the Federal Government for making petroleum products available across the country during the Yuletide, Oladiti said the Apapa gridlock appeared to have overwhelmed the authorities and called for urgent measures to remedy the situation. He, however, sympathised with the drivers over the deplorable condition of the roads and the hardship they face in plying the roads daily while conveying petroleum products. Oladiti said plans were underway to check activities of suspected criminals that portray PTD drivers in a bad light, as the union would soon roll out new identity cards and stickers designed to identify genuine members. He urged members of PTD to be vigilant and cautious on the roads during the Yuletide season and avoid night journeys for their safety and for accident-free roads during and after the festive season.‎

NUPENG Multi-Purpose Co-Operative Holds Annual General Meeting, Gives Financial Report

The management of NUPENG Multi Purpose Co-Operative society and its members on Friday, December 13 held the 2019 Annual General Meeting in Jibowu, just as it assured shareholders that the hope of the association paying dividend is brighter in the immediate future than it was several years ago. Chairman of the Co-operative, Comrade Adamson Momoh stated this at the meeting. He pointed to some major achievements of the society since the inception of the current management team and informed members that there is still room for improvement. Treasurer of the Co-operative, Comrade Victor Okelakin who officially delivered the financial report while fielding questions from members commended them for their cooperation and as well admonished them not to renege in honoring their obligations. The Secretary of the Co-operative, Comrade Oluchi Amaogu on her part equally applauded the members for making the society grow in leaps and bounds. She continued by saying management will focus on embedding disciplined cost management as well as mining synergies across membership to improve the profitability of the business and deliver value to all stakeholders. Comrade Oluchi further said the integrity of the Union and its management members have as well given room for people who are not staff to benefit from the profit and purpose driven society. Co-operative form of business organization is different from other forms of organizations. It is a voluntary association of people with collectively owned fund, organised on the democratic principle of equality, who join together to supply for their requirements through mutual action, and in which the objective is service rather than profit. For NUPENG, this initiative has essentially created safety net to protect the economically weaker sections of the society from the oppression of the economically organised strong segment of the society. The principle underlying a co-operative organization is mutual help, i.e., “each for all and all for each”. Thankfully NUPENG is playing to the rules in tandem with global best practices.
